Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu welcomed Bundestag representatives from the state of Saxony Carsten Körber and Florian Oest Jan. 23 in Taipei City.

The national-level legislators were accompanied by state government officials, members of its business community and academics for a visit Jan. 18-24. Wu met the delegation over a lunch at which the two sides exchanged views on mutual economic and technological promotion, as well as the expansion of Mandarin language education in Saxony, the MOFA said.

The deputy minister noted that in recent years there has been continuous growth in Taiwan’s export volume, adding that the recently announced establishment of a chip fabrication facility by Hsinchu City-headquartered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in Dresden, Saxony, would further facilitate the joint forging of a more resilient democratic supply chain.

Wu also said that, faced with China’s military aggressions, Taiwan would continue to increase investment in national defense while working with international democracies to collaboratively safeguard cross-strait peace.

Körber said that TSMC’s investment in Dresden lays a robust foundation for a partnership between Saxony and Taiwan. He anticipated that this trip would deepen bilateral links in economy, politics, and technology.

Born in the former East Germany, Körber expressed a deep appreciation of the value of freedom and said that Taiwan and Germany must cooperate ever more closely to meet the challenges of authoritarianism, the MOFA said. (POC-E)
